About Nordcee
The Nordic Center for Earth Evolution, NordCEE, is a center of excellence funded by the Danish National Research Foundation (Danmarks Grundforskningsfond). NordCEE is focused on exploring the long history of life’s evolution on Earth. We will investigate how biological evolution has both shaped and responded to the evolving chemistry of the Earth-surface environment. Thus, our purpose is to place the long history of biological innovation within the context of environmental change. Our hope is to understand what special circumstances have paved the way to establishing the abundant, conspicuous, and diverse life that the planet Earth currently enjoys. Thus, our goal is to untangle the dynamics between biological evolution, element cycling, and Earth-surface change. To accomplish this goal we identify three major research themes:
Don Canfield from the University of Southern Denmark is center director and Odense exists as center “headquarters”. Minik Rosing is the informal group leader in Copenhagen and Stefan Bengtson serves the same function in Stockholm.
- Reconstructing the history of environmental change
- Identifying major episodes of biological innovation
- Ecosystem evolution and controls of Earth surface chemistry
